I recently read a story about how Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk daily to preserve her beauty and youth. Legend has it that over 700 donkeys were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath. Ummm… Wow…
But don’t worry, no donkeys are needed for my “revised” version of her recipe.
Why milk? Milk contains lactic acid, which removes dead skin cells and softens skin. The lactic acid is very mild. So it won’t irritate the skin.
Some stories also say that Cleopatra added honey, lavender, and rose petals to her daily baths for added benefits. Honey is full of antioxidants. Lavender and rose provide a calming and romantic fragrance.
Since I don’t have 700 lactating donkeys readily available, I used the next best thing… powdered milk. It is better to get whole powdered milk. This is one time when full fat is your friend. The higher the fat content, the more nourishing it is to your skin. Unfortunately, I went to three different stores and could only find nonfat powdered milk. Oh well… it’s better than nothing.
I also added Lavender essential oil, cornstarch (soothes and relieves dry, itchy skin), and baking soda (softens skin) to my recipe. (I forgot to include the corn starch in my picture below.)
Combine everything except the honey in a jar. Put the lid on the jar and give it a shake to infuse the ingredients with the Lavender.
Let the mixture sit for 24 hours before using to let the essential oil to absorb into the mixture. To use, pour 1 to 2 cups of your milk bath under hot running water. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of raw honey.
To add a little romance to your bath, toss in a few rose petals.
Then, relax and enjoy!
